When we bought our townhouse we assumed that it would have a gate (and thank goodness ours) because that was exactly the reason we either wanted a downstairs apartment or a house for easy access for children (and us) in and out of the house. We were speechless when we realised that to have a gate was not the "norm"! Great that you have been able to put one in ... not everyone is going to have that luxury.
